People who are healthy usually report feeling happier overall, and perform better on the job. Those who are satisfied with their benefits plans are less likely to look for employment elsewhere. That’s why a comprehensive benefits package is often one of the smartest investments a business owner can make.
Of course, healthcare works best when we don’t see it as a way of fixing health problems, but of preventing them. Many group health insurance plans are designed with this idea, and provide routine preventive care for free, or at very low cost to employees.
Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware of these benefits, and aren’t taking advantage of them.
Routine physical. These are usually provided free of charge, to all members of a group health insurance plan. Attending annual physicals can help us identify chronic medical problems early on, so that treatment is easier and more effective, or prevent the development of these conditions in the first place.
Dental checkups. Most dental plans offer free or low-cost exams and gum disease (although those are important enough). Dentists can often detect early signs of conditions like:
- Oral cancer
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease
- Pancreatic cancer
- Bone loss
Vision care. It’s normal for vision to change over the years, and brain tumors are first detected at a routine eye exam.
If you’re part of a group health insurance plan, remember to inquire about all of your routine, preventive care options. And if you’re a business owner paying for benefits, make sure your employees can access them. Communicate regularly with workers, and happier, making your company a better place to work.
