When you think of preventing claims on your homeowners insurance, you probably think of ways you can prevent damage to your home. However, another common source of claims comes from incidents involving liability. In order to prevent liability claims involving medical bills, take these steps to reduce the likelihood of an injury on your property:
Prevent slips and use non-skid pads under rugs.
Remember pool safety. Drowning is a major cause of death in children. If you have a pool, be sure to enclose it with a fence and prevents liability issues. Also consider an alarm that detects movement in the pool.
Take steps to prevent dog bites. Proper training and take the proper steps to ensure appropriate behavior.
Think twice about that trampoline. If you really want one, make sure to enclose it with a safety net. Tell your kids that other children are not allowed to use the trampoline. They are a leading cause of backyard accidents and liability claims.
Provide lighting. Keep stairs, walkways, and repair technicians will occasionally be on your property.
Child proof your home. Even if you don’t have children, you might have occasional guests who bring their offspring. Remember stairs, poisonous substances, dangling cords, prescription medicines, and hot appliances all pose a risk to small children.
