If you’re involved in a car accident, your mind will probably be racing, and you will worry about a variety of possible outcomes. The first thing you should do, though, is stay calm. Then remember to follow these four steps.
Check for damage. Obviously, your primary concern should be the safety of your passengers, as well as the passengers in the other vehicle. But if you can, navigate your car out of traffic to a safe spot on the side of the road. Then, after making sure everyone is safe, check the vehicle for damages.
Call the police. If anyone is hurt, call 911 and ask where you can obtain a copy of the report later.
Exchange information with the other driver. Talk to the other driver(s) and time of the accident. If you can, take a photo of the damage on your cell phone. Don’t discuss or try to decide who was at fault for the accident.
Contact your auto insurance agent as soon as possible. Reporting the incident promptly, and providing the requested documentation, will help the claims process move along much more smoothly. Your auto insurance company may even have a mobile app that helps you manage everything!
